An illustrated guide to "The Charge of the Heavy Brigade at Balaklava" by Dr. David R. Jones

The Charge of the Heavy Brigade at the Battle of Balaklava on 25 Oct 1854 was the most successful cavalry action of the Crimean war, though not the most famous. That honour rests with the Light Brigade of course. The exact location of the engagement between the British Heavies and the Russian cavalry is not precisely known. Maps depicting the charge usually show the clash somewhere south of the crest of the Causeway Heights that divide the Plain of Balaklava into North and South Valleys, and anywhere between Nos 4 & 6 of the Causeway Heights redoubts. Here in SP41 Dr. David R. Jones gives details of the events of the day until just after the Heavy Brigade action. He then pinpoints the probable location for the charge for the benefit of today’s battlefield visitor through the use of excellent modern colour photos. This is the 'prequel' to Dr. Jones's SP42 which covers later events at Balaklava, including the Charge of the Light Brigade, in the same ‘battlefield guide’ style.

This SP is more expensive (10.95) than normal because it was decided to publish it in full colour to best appreciate the photographs. The work is primarily intended as a guide for those actually walking the ground, but will surely become an essential addition to the shelves of all Balaklava buffs. Private 3594 William Long (1834-1890), wrote this paper 'Through the Crimea War with the 2nd Rifles' in the year 1885. Created a 'page' at Facebook.

There are one or two Crimean War related pages at Facebook, particularly a CWRS one, which is one of their 'default' pages which simply has text lifted from the Wikipedia entry for us and a poor version of our logo from somewhere. Facebook allow people to take control of these default pages if they can prove they are an official representative of the organisation concerned. I have been trying for over a year now to do this, but Facebook never reply. Sigh. So I have created another page, which is linked to at the top of this post. It is also linked from the CWRS home page.

Completed a round of translations of the How to Join page. Now in French, Bulgarian, Russian, Turkish, Swedish, Finnish, Polish, Spanish, German, Italian, Romanian, Greek and Dutch.

The purpose of these translations is not really to provide how-to-join information in various languages (but this may sometimes be useful of course), but for Search Engine Optimisation [SEO] purposes. Each page contains Crimean War keywords in its particular language and, if necessary, html character code. In time, anyone searching their local version of Google using their own language should find us right up there behind the Wikipedia page in their language.

Some of the translations have been done with Google Translate without any native speaker input. Though auto translation gets better and better, this of course will result in some very clumsy wording at times. If anyone sees anything that they can improve upon, please don't hesitate to contact the webmaster with corrections! Thank you.

This site by Patrick Leary doesn't appear to be updated very regularly — its 'Advice' page, written in 2003, has a very dated feel, having long been overtaken by online developments in the accessibility of primary and original material, despite still being sound advice for students. Nevertheless, the site is a wonderful portal and guide for research into all aspects of the Victorian era.

It is a collection of 192 transcribed family letters from three brothers, written in the ten years from 1855-1865. These include 41 from the Crimea. Unusually, all three brothers were there at the same time.

"Irregular Correspondence is a collection of 192 letters, mainly written in the ten years from 1855 by the three eldest sons of John and Eliza Laurie, to their parents. The letters have been transcribed and reassembled, primarily for the benefit of interested family members.

The earliest surviving letter was written by the youngest of the three brothers, Julius, about to embark from Liverpool, initially destined for Malta. He was a 15 year old Ensign and very excited at the prospect of action in the Crimea where he also hoped to join his two elder brothers John, 19, a Lieutenant in 4th Regiment of Foot and Peter, 17, a civilian on board a merchant vessel."

"Apologies for a short period off-line which left Douglas [Austin] the chore of running my Suite 101 articles to earth. Also thanks to him for such kind words, greatly appreciated.

Just to add that the Suite 'archives' all subjects on completion. (Whilst one could never own to 'completing' writing about the War, I suppose I ground to a halt which amounted to the same thing under their rules.) When 'archived' several irritating things happen. All trimmings disappear including the 'welcome' page, hence the eventual url change. Most important, all links from the articles are disabled. That means that the illustrations, maps, plans and other visuals I thought essential to the articles are no longer available. (Luckily the orbats were presented as separate articles) However I do have all the originals in New Zealand and some available from my computer here and I will be happy to scan on request if not immediately, at least from October.

It is also a pain that the text is presented in nibble-sized pages, so I would recommend downloading and reformatting before reading.

Since this has come up, I would like to draw attention to the five articles on the Sardinian Army in the series. Herman Van Meir wrote these for me, after detailed research of the original Italian language sources - a challenge to which he responded admirably after I had issued it when his perceptive questioning on the subject had left me at a loss."

Finished populating the "On This Day" Google Calendar up to the end of March. The calendar provides an automatic post to our Twitter feed (crimeanwar) and has essentially the same content as the html in the iframe on the home page and the RSS feed (see the right column of this blog) which is also available.

The "On This Day" feature is now being automatically blogged in conjunction with the other ways it is piped to the public. After various experiments I have decided that this is the most effective way to post automatically to Twitter.

The system uses Google Calendar reminders as the source. They are sent to a special email address which automatically forwards them to the blog. The RSS feed from the blog is posted to Twitter using Twitterfeed.

There are five main benefits with this method: (1) Once I have set up and fully populated the calendar I can forget the whole thing (hooray!); (2) the calendar itself can be embedded at the bottom of the blog so that the whole year can be checked if desired (at the moment it is only populated until the end of the year); (3) Google Calendars have a Geo Location tie-in with Maps so that each blog post can have a location link; (4) 'Comments' are allowed in the blog so people can add their own relevant event to the bottom of a date post (moderated); and (5) if you use Google Calendars you can import the calendar into yours.

The blog is accessible from the red 'blog button' below the iframe of the feed at the top of the homepage - next to the orange 'RSS feed'.

Second back issue now available at Lulu.com. Both are now available as PDF downloads too. The print versions sell for £3.75 - the same as the surplus original print-run. We make very little profit at Lulu at this price because of their sliding scale of costs. But we make up for it by charging £3.50 for the PDF download, for which costs are much less of course. However we think this is still very good value for the customer as there are no shipping costs to contend with, unlike the print version.

Alfred Robert Thompson — Commissariat Staff, Letters home from the East. Thompson joined the Commissariat and was stationed at Balaklava during 1855. He also spent time at Constantinople to recover his health. These are his letters home from the East to his sister Jane, between 17 January and 11 June 1855. Transcribed and compiled by Hamish Bradley.

This is available in two editions: the 'economy' with an entirely black and white interior, and 'colour' edition which has colour illustrations where available.

Link on the home page to the British Library's new 'British Newspapers Online'.

Extremely useful for all that reporting which didn't make it to The Times, and indeed for all those who don't have access to the Times Digital Archive, as much of that newspaper's wartime reporting was taken by other publications.

This new service is free to search but costs money for almost all downloads, however the whole site is free if you are a member of a subscribing institution. (Personally I prefer a pay-per-item system like the National Archives, or a straight sub: this day or week access is a bit of a 'con' if you just need to look up one thing. TM) However, £6.99 for 100 views in 24 hours or £9.99 for 200 views in a week, both look like good value... just try and put together enough topics at one time to get your money's worth! The list of newspapers scanned is awesome: there are 49 local and national titles which can be searched, including The Penny Illustrated and The Graphic which are free to view. This is an immense step forward in the provision of Crimean War research material. Happy hunting!
